2.87

舉：「藥山久不上堂，知事白云：『大眾久思和尚示誨。』山云：『教槌鐘著。』大眾方集，山便掩却門，知事咨白：『既許為大眾上堂，為什麼一言不施？』山云：『經有經師，論有論師，爭怪得老僧。』」師云：「可惜藥山老漢，平地上喫撲，盡大地人扶不起。」

He cited: "Yaoshan had not ascended the hall for a long time. The administrator addressed him, saying: 'The great assembly has long yearned for the upādhyāya's instructions.' Yaoshan said: 'Have the bell struck.' Just as the great assembly gathered, Yaoshan shut the door. The administrator inquired: 'Since you consented to ascend the hall for the great assembly, why did you not offer a single word?' Yaoshan said: 'For sūtras there are sūtra masters; for treatises there are treatise masters. How can you blame this old monk?'" The Master said: "What a pity that the old fellow Yaoshan took a tumble on level ground, and the people of the entire earth cannot help him up!"
