2.88

舉：「石鞏曾為獵人，趁一鹿從馬大師菴前過，問云：『還見我鹿麼？』大師云：『爾是甚人？』鞏云：『我是獵人。』馬云：『爾還解射也無？』云：『解射。』馬云：『一箭射幾箇？』云：『一箭射一箇。』馬云：『爾不解射。』鞏云：『和尚莫解射否？』云：『我解射。』鞏云：『和尚一箭射幾箇？』馬云：『我一箭射一群。』鞏云：『彼此生命，何用射他？』馬云：『爾既如是，何不自射？』鞏云：『若教某甲自射，直是無下手處。』馬云：『者漢無明煩惱頓歇。』鞏於是以刀斷其髮，在菴給侍。」師云：「馬大師一箭射一群，信彩射得，有甚用處？不如他石鞏一箭射一箇，却是好手。雪竇今日効古人之作，擬放一箭。」高聲喝云：「看箭！」復云：「中也。」便下座。

He cited: "Shigong had once been a hunter. Chasing a deer, he passed in front of Great Master Ma's hermitage and asked: 'Have you seen my deer?' The Great Master said: 'Who are you?' Shigong said: 'I am a hunter.' Ma said: 'Do you know how to shoot?' He said: 'I know how to shoot.' Ma said: 'How many do you shoot with one arrow?' He said: 'With one arrow I shoot one.' Ma said: 'You do not know how to shoot.' Shigong said: 'Upādhyāya, do you know how to shoot?' He said: 'I know how to shoot.' Shigong said: 'How many does the upādhyāya shoot with one arrow?' Ma said: 'With one arrow I shoot a whole herd.' Shigong said: 'Both are living beings; why shoot them?' Ma said: 'Since you are like this, why do you not shoot yourself?' Shigong said: 'If you have me shoot myself, there is simply no place to apply hands.' Ma said: 'This fellow's ignorance and afflictions have suddenly ceased!' Shigong thereupon cut off his hair with a knife and attended upon him at the hermitage." The Master said: "Great Master Ma shot a whole herd with one arrow—shooting at random, what use is that? It is not as good as Shigong shooting one with one arrow, who was rather a master hand. Today Xuedou emulates the conduct of the ancients and intends to loose an arrow." Calling out with a loud shout, he said: "Watch the arrow!" Again he said: "A hit!" Then he stepped down from his seat.
