3.36

舉：「師祖問南泉：『摩尼珠，人不識，如來藏裏親收得。如何是如來藏？』云：『王老師與爾往來者是藏。』」師云：「草裏漢。祖云：『不往不來者。』云：『亦是藏。』」師云：「雪上加霜。祖云：『如何是珠？』」師云：「嶮。百尺竿頭作伎倆，不是好手，者裏著得箇眼，賓主互換，便能深入虎穴。或不漝麼，縱饒師祖悟去，也是龍頭蛇尾漢。」

He cited: "Master Zu asked Nanquan, '"The maṇi jewel, people do not know; personally gathered within the tathāgatagarbha." What is the tathāgatagarbha?' [Nanquan] said, 'Old Master Wang coming and going with you is the garbha.'" The Master said, "A fellow in the grass." "Zu said, 'What about that which does not come and does not go?' [Nanquan] said, 'That too is the garbha.'" The Master said, "Adding frost on top of snow." "Zu said, 'What is the jewel?'" The Master said, "Perilous! Performing tricks atop a hundred-foot pole is not the mark of a master hand. If one can set an eye here, host and guest interchanging, one can deeply enter the tiger's cave. If not so, even though Master Zu were enlightened, he would still be a fellow with a dragon's head and a snake's tail."
