3.43

舉：「三角示眾云：『若論此事，眨上眉毛早是蹉過。』麻谷出云：『蹉過即不問，如何是此事？』角云：『蹉過。』谷便掀倒禪床，三角便打。」師云：「兩箇有頭無尾漢，眉毛未曾眨上，說什麼此事蹉過？」有僧問：「眉毛為什麼不眨上？」師便打。

He cited: "Sanjiao addressed the assembly, saying: 'If one discusses this matter, raising an eyebrow is already missing it.' Magu came forward and said, 'Setting aside missing it, what is this matter?' Jiao said, 'Missing it.' Magu then overturned the meditation bed. Sanjiao struck him." The Master said, "Two fellows with heads but no tails! Before their eyebrows were ever raised, what talk is there of missing this matter?" A monk asked, "Why were the eyebrows not raised?" The Master struck him at once.
