3.42

舉：「臨濟與普化去施主家齋，濟問：『毛吞巨海、芥納須彌，為復是神通妙用？為復法爾如然？』化踢倒飯床。濟云：『太麁生。』化云：『者裏是甚所在？說麁說細。』濟休去。至來日又同赴一施主齋。濟復問：『今日供養何似昨日。』化又踢倒飯床。濟云：『太麁生。』化云：『瞎漢，佛法說什麼麁細？』濟吐舌。」師云：「兩箇老賊，喫飯也不了，好與二十棒。棒雖行，且那箇是正賊？」

He cited: "Linji and Puhua went to a donor's house for a meal. Linji asked, 'A hair swallowing the great ocean, a mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru—is this the wondrous function of spiritual penetrations, or is it phenomena being naturally as they are?' Puhua kicked over the meal table. Linji said, 'Far too coarse!' Puhua said, 'What place is this to speak of coarse and fine?' Linji let it rest. On the following day, they again went together to a donor's meal. Linji asked again, 'How does today's offering compare to yesterday's?' Puhua again kicked over the meal table. Linji said, 'Far too coarse!' Puhua said, 'Blind fellow! In the Buddhadharma, what talk is there of coarse and fine?' Linji stuck out his tongue." The Master said, "Two old thieves, cannot even finish eating a meal; they deserve twenty blows of the stick. Although the stick is applied, which one is the true thief?"
