[The Master] cited: "Jiashan and Dingshan were traveling together. While conversing, Dingshan said, 'If within birth-and-death there is no Buddha, then there is no birth-and-death.' Jiashan said, 'If within birth-and-death there is a Buddha, one is not deluded by birth-and-death.' Neither consenting to the other, they went together to Damei. After meeting him, they fully recounted the preceding matter. Jiashan asked, 'I do not know which is intimate and which is distant?' Damei said, 'One is intimate, one is distant.' Shan asked again, 'Which is intimate?' Damei said, 'Go for now; come tomorrow.' On the next day, Jiashan came and asked again, 'I do not know which is intimate?' Damei said, 'The intimate one does not ask; the one who asks is not intimate.' Later, when Jiashan was dwelling [as abbot], he said, 'At that time at Damei, I lost an eye.'" The Master said, "Jiashan ultimately did not know that he had exchanged for an eye. If the old fellow Damei, upon hearing it cited at that time, had struck both of them out at once with his stick, not only would he have cut through the entanglements of both men, but he would also have become an ancestral master for the world."
