4.103

有老宿見官人手中執笏，乃問：「在官人手中為笏，在天子手中為珪，在老僧手中喚作什麼？」代云：「弄巧成拙。」

A veteran elder saw an official holding a tablet in his hand and thereupon asked, "In an official's hand it is a tablet; in the Son of Heaven's hand it is a sceptre; in this old monk's hand, what is it called?" On his behalf [the Master] said, "Trying to be clever only makes a blunder."
