4.38

上堂云：「口只堪喫飯，雲門大師拈了也，儞來者裏聽什麼椀鳴聲。」以拄杖一時打下。代僧，當時但近前把住拄杖云：「和尚，今日困。」又云：「關棙子即不問，上座作麼生是牛頭橫說竪說？」代云：「著甚來由。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "'The mouth is only fit for eating rice'—Great Master Yunmen has already brought it up. What sound of a clinking bowl have you come here to listen to?" With his staff, he drove them all away with blows at once. Speaking on behalf of the monks at that moment, he simply stepped forward, grabbed the staff, and said: "Upādhyāya, today you are tired." He also said: "The key mechanism is not what I ask about; Venerable, how is it that Niutou speaks this way and that?" Speaking on their behalf, he said: "What reason is there for it?"
