4.48

上堂云：「如來惟一說無二說，穿却衲僧鼻孔，換却衲僧眼睛即得，若教我明破，恐帶累儞，不是好人。」代云：「欲見其師，先觀弟子。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "The Tathāgata spoke only one teaching, not two. Piercing the nostrils of patch-robed monks and changing the eyes of patch-robed monks will do; but if I am made to explain it completely, I fear it will implicate you and make you not good people." Speaking on their behalf, he said: "If you wish to know the teacher, first look at the disciple."
