師因在莊，數僧侍立次，師問云：「維摩老云：『步步是道場。』這裏何似山裏？」眾下語，師皆不諾，師代云：「只恐和尚不肯。」

Once, when the master was at the manor and several monks were standing in attendance, the master asked: "Old Vimalakīrti said: 'Every step is the place of enlightenment.' How does this place compare to the mountains?" The assembly offered words, but the master approved none of them. On [their] behalf the master said: "We only fear the upādhyāya will not approve."
