[The Master] cited: "Zhaozhou asked a monk, 'Have you ever read the Lotus Sūtra?' The monk said, 'I have.' Zhaozhou said, 'Wearing the patch-robe in quiet seclusion, falsely called an araṇya, deluding and confusing worldly people. How do you understand this?' The monk was about to make a bow, but Zhaozhou said, 'Did you come wearing a patch-robe?' The monk said, 'I came wearing it.' Zhaozhou said, 'Do not delude me.' The monk said, 'How can one avoid deluding [you]?' Zhaozhou said, 'Do not take my words.'"
The Master said, "Great and small Zhaozhou—a dragon's head and a snake's tail! If you can discern this, you will see right through Zhaozhou. If you are not clear about it, each of you tucking your patch-robes high had best not delude Cuifeng."
