[The Master] cited: "While Guizong was hoeing weeds, he saw a snake and chopped it with his hoe. A monk saw this and asked, 'I have long heard of Guizong, but turns out you are a coarse-acting śramaṇa.' Guizong said, 'Are you coarse, or am I coarse?' Later, Xuefeng asked Deshan, 'What was the ancient's intention in chopping the snake?' Deshan immediately struck him, and Xuefeng ran away. Deshan called out, 'Cloth-robe!' Xuefeng turned his head, and Deshan said, 'When you are enlightened in the future, only then will you know this old fellow's thorough grandmotherly heart.'"
The Master said, "Guizong only knew how to be careful at the beginning, but could not protect the end; Deshan was quite able to seize the command, yet was not clear about chopping the snake." The Master called out to the great assembly, saying, "Watch Cuifeng chop three or five today!" With his staff, he drove them all down at once.
