He brought up: "One day Qinshan ascended the hall, raised his fist, then opened it, saying: 'Opened, it is a palm; the five fingers are uneven.' Then he gripped it again, saying: 'Now it is a fist; there is surely neither high nor low. Is there still anything to discuss?' A monk came forward from the assembly and raised his fist. Shan said, 'You are merely a fellow without opening and closing.'" The Master said, "Xuedou is not like that." Thereupon he raised his fist and said, "Gripped, it is a fist; there is high and low." Then he opened it and said, "Opened, it becomes a palm; there is neither faction nor bias. And tell me: is opening up for people better, or holding fast for people better? Opening also builds the cart; gripping also fits the ruts. If you say, 'Building the cart behind closed doors, going out the door it fits the ruts,' I also know you are making a livelihood inside a ghost cave."
