[The Master] cited: "Muzhou instructed the assembly: 'I saw Baizhang, who did not recognize good from bad. As soon as the assembly gathered, he would drive them all out with his staff at once. Then he would call to them again; when the assembly turned their heads, Baizhang would say: "What is it?" What was there to converse about with them? When Upādhyāya Huangbo's assembly had just gathered, he would drive them all out with his staff at once. Then he would call to them again; when the assembly turned their heads, Huangbo would say: "The moon resembles a curved bow; little rain, much wind." That was somewhat better.'" The Master said, "Why speak of 'somewhat better'? It was simply far from it. If it were up to Xuedou, when the assembly gathered, I would drive them all out at once and be done with it. Or if there were an iron hammer without a hole, exerting its strength for the assembly, well able to shoulder the load, it could blanket the ancient and modern and shut off heaven and earth." The Master suddenly took up his staff and said, "Letting this one move pass."
