[The Master] cited: "Beichan asked a monk, 'Where have you recently left?' The monk said, 'Huangzhou.' Chan said, 'Where did you spend the summer retreat?' The monk said, 'Zifu.' Chan said, 'With what do you assist blessings (zifu)?' The monk said, 'Twofold public cases.' Chan said, 'Yet you are in my hands.' The monk said, 'If I am in your hands, take me in.' Chan struck him at once; the monk was not satisfied, and [Chan] chased him out on the spot." The Master said, "Strange! It seems almost the action of one who surpasses the teacher. Yet do you know this monk? He only knows how to covet what is ahead, unable to look to what is behind. If he were in Xuedou's hands, even if the stick broke, I still would not let him off!"
