In the past, I traveled along the Han River and arrived at Mount Lu, constantly visiting monastic dwellings and inheriting the stream of the Chan lineage, trampling alongside elephants and horses until mind and mouth were full of eager longing. Evaluating contemporary times, it is truly difficult to find their master! Yet, not to deceive future generations grossly, and pointing to the palm and gripping the wheel, how could one take anything other than this? Courteously accompanying the old venerable, I beheld his painted true likeness; comparing past and present, sighs and regrets vanished. Heights and depths cannot be probed to their summit; brightness and darkness cannot be exhausted to their limit; therefore, I consistently admired and relied upon him. Thus, I exert myself to offer this praise, hoping that fellows beyond letters, in whom the Dao abides, may return together.
