16.36

舉：「風穴在郢州陞座云：『祖師心印，狀似鐵牛之機，去即印住，住即印破。只如不去不住，印即是？不印即是？』時盧陂長老出問：『某甲有鐵牛之機，請師不搭印。』穴云：『慣釣鯨鯢沈巨浸，却將蛙步𩥇泥沙。』陂佇思，穴喝云：『長老何不進語？』陂擬議，穴便打一拂子云：『長老還記得話頭麼？試舉看。』陂擬開口，穴又打一拂子。牧主云：『將知佛法與王法一般。』穴云：『見箇什麼道理？』牧主云：『當斷不斷，返招其亂。』穴便下座。」師云：「風穴擐三玄戈甲，施四種主賓，明立信旗密排陣敵，及至盧陂纔跨鐵牛，劃時擒下，遂令牧主知歸。所謂龍馳虎驟，鳳翥鸞翔。雖然，若是崇寧，待伊道有鐵牛之機，劈脊便棒。殺人刀、活人劍，還知落處麼？」

[The Master] cited: "When Fengxue ascended the seat in Yingzhou, he said: 'The ancestral masters' mind-seal is shaped like the dynamic of the iron ox: if it moves, the seal is impressed; if it stays, the seal is broken. Just as it neither moves nor stays, is impressing it right, or is not impressing it right?' At that time Elder Lupi came forward and asked: 'I have the dynamic of the iron ox; I invite the Master not to apply the seal.' Fengxue said: 'Accustomed to angling for whales sinking in the giant deep, instead I find a frog striding in mud and sand.' Lupi hesitated in thought. Fengxue shouted and said: 'Elder, why do you not advance a word?' Lupi deliberated; Fengxue struck him with the whisk, saying: 'Elder, do you still remember the dialogue? Try to cite it and let us see.' Lupi was about to open his mouth when Fengxue struck him again with the whisk. The governor said: 'I know that the Buddha's Dharma and the king's law are identical.' Fengxue said: 'What principle did you see?' The governor said: 'When one should cut off and does not cut off, one invites chaos instead.' Fengxue then stepped down from the seat." The Master said: "Fengxue donned the armor of the three mysteries, deployed the four relations of host and guest, clearly set up the battle banners and densely arrayed the opposing ranks. When Lupi was just about to straddle the iron ox, he was captured in an instant, thereby causing the governor to know where to return. This is what is called dragons galloping and tigers rushing, phoenixes soaring and luan birds hovering. Even so, were it Chongning, waiting for him to say he has the dynamic of the iron ox, I would strike him across the back with the staff. The sword that kills people, the sword that gives people life—do you still know where they land?"
