16.39

舉：「舍利弗問須菩提：『夢中說六波羅蜜，與覺時是同是別？』」師拈云：「低聲低聲。須菩提云：『此義幽深，吾不能說。』」師拈云：「爛泥裏有刺。『會中有箇彌勒大士，可往問之。』」師拈云：「推過別人又爭得。舍利弗遂問彌勒。」師拈云：「將錯就錯。彌勒云：『誰為彌勒，誰是彌勒者。』」師拈云：「面皮厚三寸。」

[The Master] cited: "Śāriputra asked Subhūti: 'Is expounding the six pāramitās in a dream the same as or different from when awake?'" The Master commented: "Quiet, quiet!" "Subhūti said: 'This meaning is profound; I cannot speak of it.'" The Master commented: "In soft mud there are thorns." "'In the assembly is the Great Being Maitreya; you may go ask him.'" The Master commented: "Pushing it onto someone else—how can that be acceptable?" "Śāriputra then asked Maitreya." The Master commented: "Making the best of a mistake." "Maitreya said: 'Who is Maitreya? Who is the one who is Maitreya?'" The Master commented: "The skin on his face is three inches thick!"
