16.44

舉：「僧問趙州：『未有世界早有此性，世界壞時此性不壞，如何是不壞之性？』州云：『四大五蘊。』僧云：『此猶是壞底，如何是不壞之性？』州云：『四大五蘊。』」師云：「千尺寒潭徹底清。」

[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou: 'Before the world existed, this nature already was; when the world is destroyed, this nature is not destroyed. What is the undestroyed nature?' Zhaozhou said: 'The four great elements and five aggregates.' The monk said: 'These are still subject to destruction; what is the undestroyed nature?' Zhaozhou said: 'The four great elements and five aggregates.'" The Master said: "A thousand-foot cold pool, clear to the bottom."
