17.16

舉：「僧問長慶：『有問有答賓主歷然，無問無答時如何？』慶云：『怕爛却那？』僧問睦州：『有問有答賓主歷然，無問無答時如何？』州云：『相逢盡道休官去，林下何曾見一人。』」師云：「若問崇寧：『有問有答賓主歷然，無問無答時如何？』對他道：『收得安南又憂塞北。』」

[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Changqing, 'When there is questioning and answering, host and guest are distinct. What about when there is neither question nor answer?' Qing said, 'Are you afraid it will rot away?' A monk asked Muzhou, 'When there is questioning and answering, host and guest are distinct. What about when there is neither question nor answer?' Muzhou said, 'Upon meeting, all say they will resign from office, / Yet who has ever been seen living beneath the trees?'"
The Master said, "Were someone to ask Chongning, 'When there is questioning and answering, host and guest are distinct. What about when there is neither question nor answer?' I would reply to him: 'Having captured Annam, one worries again about the northern frontier.'"
