17.29

舉：「道吾漸源至一家弔慰，源撫棺木云：『生耶死耶？』吾云：『生也不道。死也不道。』源云：『為什麼不道？』吾云：『不道不道。』行至中路，源云：『請和尚為某甲道，若不道則打和尚去也。』吾云：『打即任打，道即不道。』」師拈云：「銀山鐵壁有什麼階昇處？山僧今夜錦上鋪華，八字打開，商量這公案去也。生也全機現，死也全機現，不道復不道，箇中無背面。直下便承當，不隔一條線，逼塞大虛空，赤心常片片。」

[The Master] cited: "Daowu and Jianyuan went to a house to offer condolences. Jianyuan patted the coffin and said: 'Is it living or is it dead?' Daowu said: 'I will not say living, and I will not say dead.' Jianyuan said: 'Why won't you say?' Daowu said: 'I will not say! I will not say!' Midway along the road, Jianyuan said: 'Please, Venerable, tell me. If you do not tell me, I will strike you, Venerable.' Daowu said: 'If you strike me, strike as you will; as for telling you, I will not say.'"
The Master critiqued: "In a silver mountain and iron wall, what steps are there to ascend? Tonight this mountain monk adds flowers on brocade, opens wide with the character 'eight', and discusses this gong'an. Living—the complete dynamic appears; dead—the complete dynamic appears. Not saying, and again not saying: within this there is neither front nor back. Directly take responsibility for it—not separated by a single thread; it obstructs the great void, a red heart ever broken into pieces."
