17.38

舉：「雲門示眾云：『百草頭上道將一句來。』眾無對，自代云：『俱。』」師拈云：「直得萬機寢削、千眼頓開，細如須彌、大如芥子，軟如鐵、硬如泥。雖然如是，只道得一半。或有問山僧，只對他道：『收。』且道：落在什麼處？」

[The Master] cited: "Yunmen instructed the assembly, saying: 'Speak a phrase atop the tips of the hundred grasses!' When the assembly had no response, he substituted on their behalf, saying: 'Both!'"
The Master critiqued: "Directly causing the ten thousand machinations to rest and fall away, and a thousand eyes to suddenly open; as fine as Mount Sumeru, as large as a mustard seed; soft as iron, hard as mud. Even though this is so, he only managed to say half. If someone were to ask this mountain monk, I would simply say to him: 'Withdrawn.' But tell me: where does this end up?"
