17.4

舉：「太原孚上座問鼓山：『父母未生已前鼻孔在什麼處？』山云：『即今生也，鼻孔在什麼處？』孚不肯，乃云：『爾問我，與爾道。』鼓山問：『父母未生已前鼻孔在什麼處？』孚但搖扇而已。」師云：「奇特因緣，須以奇特激發；殊勝大事，須以殊勝舉揚。雖然隱顯無差，其奈巧拙有異。或有問崇寧，父母未生已前鼻孔在什麼？只劈口便掌。」

[The Master] cited: "Senior Monk Fu of Taiyuan asked Gushan, 'Before parents gave birth to you, where were the nostrils?' Shan said, 'Born right now, where are the nostrils?' Fu did not approve and said, 'You ask me, and I will tell you.' Gushan asked, 'Before parents gave birth to you, where were the nostrils?' Fu merely waved his fan." The Master said, "An extraordinary condition must be stirred up with what is extraordinary; an exceptionally wondrous great matter must be held up with what is exceptionally wondrous. Although hidden and revealed are not different, unfortunately skill and clumsiness differ. If someone asks Chongning, 'Before parents gave birth to you, where were the nostrils?' [I will] just slap him right across the mouth."
