17.54

舉：「休靜在洞山作維那，一日普請，白槌云：『上間鋤地，下間搬柴。』首座遂問云：『聖僧作箇什麼？』靜云：『當堂不正坐，那赴兩頭機。』」師拈云：「珠鑽九曲，休靜可謂神功；玉解連環，山僧更資一路。或有問：『聖僧作箇什麼？』只對他道：『廓如明鏡當堂照，不動形聲應萬緣。』」

He cited: "When Xiujing was the karmadāna under Dongshan, one day during general labor, he struck the gavel and said, 'The upper hall hoes the earth; the lower hall carries firewood.' The head monk then asked, 'What is the Holy Monk doing?' Jing said, 'Not sitting upright in the middle of the hall, how could he attend to activities at both ends?'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "Piercing a pearl with nine bends, Xiujing can be called a spiritual achievement; releasing jade intertwined in rings, this mountain monk provides yet another path. If someone asks, 'What is the Holy Monk doing?', I would only tell him, 'Broad and clear like a bright mirror illumining in the hall, / Without stirring form or sound, he responds to the myriad conditions.'"
