17.53

舉：「玄沙見鼓山來，作一圓相，山云：『人人出這箇不得。』沙云：『情知汝向驢胎馬腹裏作活計。』山云：『和尚又作麼生？』沙云：『人人出這箇不得。』山云：『和尚與麼道得，某甲却與麼道不得？』沙云：『我得，汝不得。』」師拈云：「酌然這一條路，作者方知，直得窮天地亘萬古而不移，消劫石空芥城而不盡，便是透關底也，須急著眼始得。一等是與麼時節，為什麼我得、汝不得？切忌向驢胎馬腹裏作活計。」

He cited: "Xuansha saw Gushan coming and drew a circle. Gushan said, 'No one can get out of this.' Xuansha said, 'I knew full well you make your livelihood in the belly of a donkey or the womb of a horse.' Gushan said, 'What about the Venerable?' Xuansha said, 'No one can get out of this.' Gushan said, 'The Venerable can say so; why cannot I say so?' Xuansha said, 'I may, but you may not.'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "Clearly, only adepts know this one path. It exhausts heaven and earth and spans myriad ages without shifting; it grinds away the kalpa stone and empties the mustard seed city without exhaustion. Even one who has penetrated the barrier must urgently apply their eye before they can get it. Alike at such a juncture, why is it that I may, but you may not? Above all, do not make your livelihood in the belly of a donkey or the womb of a horse!"
