He cited: "Nanquan asked a monk, 'Was there a fine wind last night?' The monk said, 'There was a fine wind last night.' Nanquan said, 'It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate.' The monk also said, 'It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate.' Later, seeing another monk, Nanquan asked, 'Was there a fine wind last night?' The monk said, 'What wind was it?' Nanquan said, 'It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate.' Nanquan said, 'One gained and one lost.'" The Master commented: "In general, when responding in dialogue, one must keep an eye out according to dynamic capacity, distinguishing dragons from snakes, sorting the black from the white. As it is said: beating the drum and playing the pipa, when met, both are masters. But as for Nanquan saying, 'One gained and one lost,' I venture to ask: Which one gained? Which one lost? To get here, you must be a transcendent person to begin with. Do you fully understand? The king of geese selects the milk; he is by nature not of the duck's kind."
