18.19

舉：「僧問香林：『如何是衲衣下事？』林云：『臘月火燒山。』」師拈云：「舉一明三衲僧孔竅，千差一轍本分鉗鎚。雖然如是，或有問道林：『如何是衲衣下事？』只對他道：『綿包特石。』」

He cited: "A monk asked Xianglin, 'What is the matter beneath the patch-robed monk's robe?' Xianglin said, 'In the twelfth lunar month, fire burns the mountain.'" The Master commented: "Raising one to illuminate three is the monk's aperture; a thousand distinctions on a single track is the hammer and tongs of the fundamental lot. Even though this is so, if someone were to ask Daolin, 'What is the matter beneath the patch-robed monk's robe?' I would simply say to him, 'Cotton wrapping a special stone.'"
