18.47

舉：「僧問雪峯：『古㵎寒泉時如何？』峯云：『瞪目不見底。』僧云：『飲者如何？』峯云：『不從口入。』後有僧舉似趙州，州云：『不可從鼻孔裏入去也。』僧却問：『古㵎寒泉時如何？』州云：『苦。』僧云：『飲者如何？』州云：『死。』雪峯聞之云：『趙州古佛，從此不答話。』」

Case: A monk asked Xuefeng, "How is it when the ancient ravine is a cold spring?" Xuefeng said, "Staring with wide eyes, one cannot see the bottom." The monk said, "What about one who drinks it?" Xuefeng said, "It does not enter through the mouth." Later, a monk cited this to Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou said, "It cannot enter through the nostrils!" The monk then asked, "How is it when the ancient ravine is a cold spring?" Zhaozhou said, "Bitter." The monk said, "What about one who drinks it?" Zhaozhou said, "Dead." When Xuefeng heard of this, he said, "Zhaozhou is an ancient Buddha; from now on I will not answer questions."
