18.59

舉：「洞山夏末示眾云：『初秋夏末，直須向萬里無寸草處去。』眾無語，僧舉似石霜，霜云：『何不道：「出門便是草。」』」

Case: At the end of summer, Dongshan instructed the assembly, saying, "In early autumn and late summer, you must head straight for where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles." The assembly made no reply. A monk cited this to Shishuang. Shishuang said, "Why didn't they say, 'As soon as one steps out the door, there is grass'?"
