18.6

舉：「金牛行食次，問龐居士：『生心受食，淨名已呵，去此二途，居士還甘否？』士云：『當時善現豈不作家？』牛云：『豈干他事？』士云：『食到口邊，被人奪却。』金牛便行食，士云：『不消一句子。』」師拈云：「善現作家金牛奇特，盡被龐居士一時領過了也。只如龐居士道不消一句子，且道：是那一句？端坐受供養，施主常安樂。」

He brought up [the following case]: "While Jinniu was distributing food, he asked Layman Pang: 'Vimalakīrti already scolded giving rise to thought while receiving food. Setting aside these two paths, does the layman still accept it or not?' The Layman said: 'At that time, was not Subhūti an adept?' Jinniu said: 'What does it have to do with another's business?' The Layman said: 'The food reached the edge of the mouth, only to be snatched away by someone.' Jinniu then continued distributing food. The Layman said: 'It doesn't even take a single phrase.'" The Master commented: "Subhūti was an adept, and Jinniu was extraordinary; all was completely taken in by Layman Pang at once. As for Layman Pang saying it does not even take a single phrase—tell me, which phrase is it? Sitting upright receiving offerings, may the donor ever be at peace."
