18.7

舉：「僧問石門：『年窮歲盡時如何？』門云：『東村王老夜燒錢。』」師拈云：「可謂神通妙用。」「僧復問開先暹和尚：『年窮歲盡時如何？』暹云：『依舊孟春猶寒。』」師拈云：「不妨田地穩密，忽有問道林：『年窮歲盡時如何？』只對他道：『定盤星上轉風車。』」

He brought up [the following case]: "A monk asked Shimen: 'How is it when the year is depleted and the months come to an end?' Shimen said: 'Old Wang of the eastern village burns spirit money at night.'" The Master commented: "This may indeed be called miraculous function of spiritual penetrations." "The monk further asked Venerable Xian of Kaixian: 'How is it when the year is depleted and the months come to an end?' Xian said: 'Just as before, the first month of spring is still cold.'" The Master commented: "His ground is certainly steady and dense. If someone suddenly asked Daolin: 'How is it when the year is depleted and the months come to an end?' I would only say to him: 'A windmill spinning on the fixed point of the balance beam.'"
