19.40

見兔放鷹，因行掉臂，赤骨歷窮，方圖富貴，放三頓棒尚遲疑，再挨方識利頭錐，單提獨脚機關外，明眼衲僧猶不會。

Seeing a hare, he releases the hawk; / as he walks along, he swings his arms. / Stripped bare and utterly destitute, / only then does he scheme for wealth and nobility. / Given thirty blows of the staff, he still hesitates; / pushed again, he finally recognizes the sharp-tipped awl. / Raised alone on a single leg outside the mechanisms, / even the clear-eyed patch-robed monk does not understand.
