19.75

舉：「趙州問南泉：『如何是道？』泉云：『平常心是道。』州云：『還許趣向也無？』泉云：『擬向即乖。』趙州云：『不擬安知是道？』泉云：『道不屬知，不屬不知。知是妄覺，不知是無記。若直達不疑之道，廓同太虛，豈可強是非耶？』州於言下大悟。」

[Case] brought up: Zhaozhou asked Nanquan: "What is the Way?" Nanquan said: "The ordinary mind is the Way." Zhaozhou said: "Does it still admit of heading towards it, or not?" Nanquan said: "To intend towards it is immediately to deviate." Zhaozhou said: "Without intending, how can one know it is the Way?" Nanquan said: "The Way does not belong to knowing, nor does it belong to not knowing. Knowing is false awareness, and not knowing is indeterminate. If you directly reach the Way that is beyond doubt, it is wide open like the great void—how could it be forced into right and wrong?" Under these words, Zhaozhou attained great awakening.
