19.79

舉：「風穴在郢州衙內陞座示眾云：『祖師心印，狀似鐵牛之機，去即印住，住即印破。只如不去不住，且道印即是？不印則是？』時有盧陂長老出問：『某甲有鐵牛之機，請師不搭印。』穴云：『慣釣鯨鯢沈巨浸，却將蛙步輾泥沙。』陂佇思，穴便喝云：『長老何不進語？』陂擬議，穴打一拂子云：『長老還記得話頭麼？』試舉看，陂擬開口，穴又打一拂子，牧主云：『將知佛法與王法一般。』穴云：『見箇什麼道理？』牧主云：『當斷不斷，返招其亂。』穴便下座。」

[Case] brought up: Fengxue ascended the seat in the government office of Yingzhou and instructed the assembly, saying: "The Patriarch's mind-seal is shaped like the dynamic of the iron ox: if it moves, the seal is held; if it stays, the seal is broken. Now, just like neither moving nor staying, tell me, is sealing correct, or is not sealing correct?" At that time, Senior Monk Lubi stepped forward and asked: "I have the dynamic of the iron ox; please, Master, do not apply the seal." Fengxue said: "Accustomed to angling for whales sinking in the great deep, / Instead I find a frog hopping, rolling in mud and sand." Lubi hesitated in thought; Fengxue immediately gave a shout and said: "Senior monk, why do you not advance a word?" Lubi deliberated; Fengxue struck him with his whisk and said: "Senior monk, do you still remember the phrase? Try to bring it up." Lubi was about to open his mouth when Fengxue struck him again with the whisk. The prefect said: "One should know that the Buddha Dharma and the king's law are alike." Fengxue said: "What principle do you see?" The prefect said: "When one should decide and does not decide, it invites chaos instead." Fengxue then descended from the seat.
