19.87

舉：「臺山路上有一婆子，僧問：『臺山路向甚處去？』婆云：『驀直去。』僧纔行，婆云：『好箇阿師，便恁麼去。』前後僧問皆如此。後有僧舉似趙州，州云：『待我為爾勘破這老婆。』遂往問：『臺山路向甚處去？』婆云：『驀直去。』州纔行，婆云：『好箇阿師，又恁麼去。』州歸舉似大眾云：『我為爾勘破這婆了也。』老宿拈云：『什麼處是勘破處？』」

[Case] brought up: On the road to Mount Tai there was an old woman. A monk asked: "Which way does the road to Mount Tai go?" The old woman said: "Go straight ahead." As soon as the monk walked on, the old woman said: "A fine master of that sort, going off just like that." All monks who asked before and after received the same. Later, a monk recounted this to Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou said: "Wait until I see through this old woman for you." He then went and asked: "Which way does the road to Mount Tai go?" The old woman said: "Go straight ahead." As soon as Zhaozhou walked on, the old woman said: "A fine master of that sort, going off like that again." Zhaozhou returned and recounted this to the great assembly, saying: "I have seen through that old woman for you." An elder master brought this up, saying: "At what place was the seeing through?"
