3.13

上堂云：「山頭鼓浪，井底揚塵，眼聽似震雷霆，耳觀如張錦繡，三百六十骨節，一一現無邊妙身，八萬四千毛端，頭頭彰寶王剎海，不是神通妙用，亦非法爾如然，苟能千眼頓開，直下十方坐斷。且超然獨脫一句作麼生道？試玉須經火，求珠不離泥。」

Ascending the hall, he said: “Beating waves on the mountain peak, raising dust at the bottom of the well; the eyes listen like striking thunder, the ears look like unfurling brocade; the three hundred and sixty joints, each manifests a boundless wondrous body; the eighty-four thousand hair-tips, each reveals oceans of lands of the Jewel King—this is not supernatural function, nor is it naturally so as Dharma. If only the thousand eyes can open at once, directly beneath, the ten directions are cut off. But how do you speak a phrase that is transcendent and uniquely liberated? Testing jade requires passing through fire; seeking a pearl does not depart from mud.”
