3.16

上堂云：「第一句下薦得，祖師乞命；第二句下薦得，人天膽落；第三句下薦得，虎口裏橫身。不是循途守轍，亦非革轍移途，透得則六臂三頭，未透亦人間天上。且道三句外一句作麼生道？生涯只在絲綸上，明月扁舟泛五湖。」

Ascending the hall, he said: “Recognizing it under the first phrase, the Patriarch begs for his life; recognizing it under the second phrase, humans and devas lose their courage; recognizing it under the third phrase, one lies horizontally in the tiger's mouth. This is not following paths and keeping to ruts, nor is it changing ruts and shifting paths. If you penetrate it, you have six arms and three heads; if you have not yet penetrated it, you are still in the human and heavenly realms. But tell me, how do you speak a phrase beyond the three phrases? One's livelihood lies solely upon the silk fishing line; under the bright moon, a small boat drifts across the five lakes.”
