Retiring from the monastery, ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "Erecting a great mansion is not the capability of a single tree; ferrying across a great river is not the strength of a single person. How much more so when the boundless sky leaves no trace, and the Great Dao's substance is vast: understanding it depends on the person, deciding it rests with oneself. Whether emerging or dwelling, speaking or silent, in the tiger's den or the demon's palace, in defiled lands or pure lands, in forests, mountains, cities, or briar patches—if in every move one possesses the dynamic to step forward, and in every place one has the view that transcends ordinary sentiments, then nothing is inadmissible. Held fast, even patriarchs and buddhas cannot peer in; let go, one is born together and dies together. And tell me: is letting go better for people, or is holding fast better for people? Do you understand? Wearing a coir raincoat, standing sideways beyond a thousand peaks, / Channeling water to irrigate vegetables before the Five Old Men. / The illusory body approaches the age of following one's heart's desires; / Lazily entangled in worldly dust for a long time, / Relying on this protective talisman, / Forcing myself to support my declining illness, I return for now to the mountains."
