At an informal gathering requested by Court Gentleman Deng, the Master said: "When the grand dynamic sings alone, the thousand sages hide their tracks; when a single phrase faces the sun, the ten directions are cut off. It pays no heed to being, nor is it bound by non-being; it does not take in the sacred, nor does it establish the profane. Clearly without concealment, clearly without leakage, the eye on the crown of the head shines, and mountains, rivers, and the great earth are fully manifest; the talisman behind the elbow opens, and the myriad phenomena instantly appear. Having such an extraordinary sign and having such an exquisite gate, it seeks only transcendent adepts and receives vessels of the Great Vehicle. Therefore it is said: 'Casting the line across the four oceans, it fishes only for fierce dragons; the mysterious dynamic beyond the conventional is to search for spiritual friends.' If one has sharp faculties and the wisdom of species, possessing the nature of great liberation, then hearing one is hearing all, understanding one is understanding all, seeing one is seeing all, realizing one is realizing all—clean and naked, bare and unadorned. Right now, is there anyone who can speak? Come out from the assembly and show some news! If you cannot yet speak, this mountain monk will open wide right here. Do you understand? / Those of sharp faculties and superior wisdom must fully realize it; / The ten stages of sages and three ranks of worthies are surpassed in a single thought." / He added in verse: / "Peerless is that superior man of Vaiśālī; / The eye on the crown of his head illuminates heaven and earth. / Relying solely on that which is wordless, / He completely opens the non-dual gate throughout the world."
