[The Master] cited: "Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying, 'Old Teacher Wang has raised a water ox since youth. If I intend to graze it east of the stream, it cannot avoid eating the king's water and grass; if I intend to graze it west of the stream, it also cannot avoid eating the king's water and grass. It is better to pay a little according to my lot, so it cannot be seen at all.'" The Master said, "Softening the glare to accord with things, blending with the dust of the world, not clashing with spear tips, gathering in and letting go at ease—this is Nanquan's fundamental lot of fodder. This mountain monk has also raised a water ox since youth: sometimes standing solitary on an isolated peak, sometimes bustling through crowded markets; regardless of east of the stream or west of the stream, straightaway shattering dust and striking the mark. Tell me: right now, where is it? Keep your eyes open and look."
