[The Master] cited: "An ancient said, 'To protect life, one must kill; / Only when all is killed off does one abide in peace. / If you understand the meaning within this, / An iron boat floats upon the water.'"
The Master said, "Tell me: what does one kill? Killing the life of sentient beings is the view of ordinary persons; killing the six bandits and afflictions is the view of doctrinal lecturers; killing buddhas and killing patriarchs is the view of great icchantikas. On the part of a patch-robed monk, what after all does one kill? Try to settle it and see!"
