[The Master] cited: "The World-Honoured One was keeping the summer retreat at a certain place. When it came to the Pravāraṇā day, Mañjuśrī was in the assembly. Kāśyapa asked Mañjuśrī, 'Where did you spend the retreat?' Mañjuśrī said, 'This summer I spent the retreat in three places.' Kāśyapa thereupon assembled the community and struck the mallet, intending to expel Mañjuśrī. Immediately he saw boundless realms, and in each realm there was a Buddha, a Mañjuśrī, and a Kāśyapa striking the mallet, intending to expel Mañjuśrī. The World-Honoured One addressed Kāśyapa, saying, 'Which Mañjuśrī do you now wish to expel?' Kāśyapa was bewildered."
The Master said, "A bell does not ring if not struck; a drum does not sound if not beaten. Kāśyapa having blocked the vital crossing, Mañjuśrī then cut off the ten directions. At that moment it was quite a Buddhist event, yet he let a move pass. Waiting until Old Man Śākya said, 'Which Mañjuśrī do you wish to expel?' he should have struck him a blow with the mallet, to see how he would bring it to a close!"
