[The Master] cited: "While Guishan was at general labor, the silence board was sounded. A monk clapped his hands and laughing 'Ha! Ha!' returned. Guishan said, 'Wondrous! This is the gate through which Avalokiteśvara enters the principle.' That evening he asked the monk, 'What principle did you see just now?' The monk said, 'I had not eaten since morning; hearing the sound of the board, I was overjoyed.' Guishan said, 'This deceives people to death!' Jingqing said, 'At that time Guishan had this one monk.' Gushan said, 'At that time Guishan did not have this one monk.'" The Master said, "This monk raised a great resounding voice, directly causing the eyes of the kalyāṇamitra of fifteen hundred people to freeze; yet when brought to examination, he turned a backward somersault instead. Were it not for Guishan, how could one see the greatness of meritorious toil? Later it was said, 'He had this one monk'—that gets only half; saying, 'He did not have this one monk'—that gets only half. Today the board, bell, wooden fish, and drum sound all together; if someone claps his hands and laughs 'Ha! Ha!', I will say directly to him: 'Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has come!'"
