[The Master] cited: "Daowu and Jianyuan went to a family to offer condolences. Yuan touched the coffin and asked Daowu, 'Is it alive or dead?' Daowu said, 'I will not say alive, and I will not say dead.' Yuan said, 'Why will you not say?' Daowu said, 'I will not say! I will not say!' Jianyuan could not fathom it. Later, at another place, he heard someone chanting the Guanyin Sūtra: 'To those who should be saved by the body of a bhikṣu, he immediately manifests the body of a bhikṣu and expounds the Dharma for them.' Suddenly he was greatly awakened." The Master said, "Daowu threw his whole body into the matter for the sake of beings, directly pointing out the source of birth and death, personally arriving there. Reaching the treasure mountain, with one question [Jianyuan] missed it face-to-face. Were it not for the adamantine true nature and roots deeply planted in past lives, how could he have suddenly reversed the light amidst the flat field and shallow grass, seeing where Daowu made an effort to help him? Tell me: what was the place where Daowu made an effort to help him? Try to say it and see!"
