He brought up [the following case]: "A monk asked Yunmen: 'What is the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya?' Yunmen said: 'It would not be difficult to speak to you of the transcendent, but how do you understand the dharmakāya?' The monk said: 'Please examine it, Venerable.' Yunmen said: 'Let examination aside for a moment. How do you understand the dharmakāya?' The monk said: 'Like this, like this.' Yunmen said: 'This is something learned on the long connecting benches. I ask you: does the dharmakāya still eat food or not?' The monk had no words. Xuedou said: 'About to complete a mountain of nine fathoms, he fails to add a single basket of earth.' Baofu said: 'Lacking even a single grain of his won't do either.' An ancient worthy also said: 'What do you call food?'" The Master commented: "Yunmen may be said to drive away the plowman's ox and snatch away the starving man's food, weighing Buddhas and patriarchs, a tortoise-mirror for the lineage vehicle. Therefore, later venerable adepts each manifested eyes to sustain and establish the lineage style. Even so, this only clarifies matters on the side of the dharmakāya, not yet the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya. And what is the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya? Within the realm there is neither turning toward nor against; beyond the gates there are scales and measures."
