Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the dynamic of flatly unfurling?" The Master said, "Horizontally and vertically, a crisscross." The monk continued, "Then it is completely irrelevant." The Master said, "Where is it irrelevant?" The monk said, "Pulling out an arrow from behind the brain." The Master said, "Press!" A monk asked, "'Father and mother are not my kin'—who is the closest kin?" The Master said, "I am always keen on this." The monk continued, "'All Buddhas are not my Way'—who is the most of the Way?" The Master said, "Only when you have a place to turn around will you get it." The monk said, "Wishing to walk a thousand miles, the single step is the beginning." The Master said, "Faithfully accept and uphold it." The Master then said, "The country having no sword to quell disorder, the four seas are peaceful and clear; the household having no drawing of Baize, the whole family enjoys good fortune. If you say there is a place where one receives the power of grace, that is precisely adding mud on top of dirt; and if you erase your tracks and swallow your voice, that too is taking south for north. Arriving here, crisscrossing horizontally and vertically, one cannot avoid error; occupying the position and tallying with the dynamic is still somewhat better. And what is the phrase that occupies the position? Hanshan meets Shide, / Clapping their hands and laughing heartily." He stepped down from the seat.
