Ascending the hall, [the master] said, "A single word cuts off all; the thousand sages fall silent. A single sword held in front leaves corpses across ten thousand li. Therefore it is said: 'Sometimes the words arrive but the intention does not; sometimes the intention arrives but the words do not.' Words can cut off intention, and intention can cut off words. Intention and words rushing together is the monk's grasp. If you can turn about like this, even the blue sky must take a blow of the staff. And tell me: what does this rely upon? Pitiable are the countless riders of the waves; in the end they still fall into the tide and die." He stepped down from the seat.
