Ascending the hall, [the master] said, "Concluding the summer retreat and holding the confession ceremony is the regular rule of the vast assembly. The autumn colors are clear and pure, and heaven and earth are crisp and severe. Prajñā flows and operates; motion and stillness are as one. The seasons show no leniency; heat and cold suddenly shift. The tune of the unproduced sends its melody beyond the clear sky; the ultimate jewel always stands revealed, its light swallowing myriad phenomena. Past and present cannot cover it; the present has no obstruction. When a single thought does not fall into various conditions, realize and attain your own realm. Why must you seek the Buddha at Vulture Peak, or inquire of the Patriarch at Shaolin? Do you understand? Untying the cloth sack, there is no restraint; be ever more diligent in tending the water buffalo." He stepped down from the seat.
