Ascending the hall, he said: “Xuedou said: ‘Righteousness emerges in years of abundance; lack breeds unfilial children. Under the gate of the patch-robed monk, is this letting go or holding fast? If someone can say, this old monk will divide half the monastery for him to live in.’ ” The Master said: “Xuedou was ill often, so he understood the properties of medicines; only after experiencing their efficacy did he transmit them to others. If among you there is one who knows abundance and knows lack, knows letting go and knows holding fast, what need is there to divide half the monastery for him to live in? Burn incense and make vows, simply wishing that he soon has a monastery to live in, letting him taste a bit of the flavor, and spared from poverty's torment and hunger's fry.”
