When the county magistrate came up the mountain, ascending the hall, the Master raised incense and showed it to the assembly: “Picked up with a free hand, its brilliance is radiant; gathered, it becomes a canopy; scattered, it becomes clouds. Burning it in the censer, we dedicate it to County Magistrate Xuande, the Daoist Practitioner Yanzhi, respectfully praying: may the mind of the Way be firm and solid, and the all-inclusive wisdom be fully clear.” Then he took his seat. “Just now, adding flowers onto brocade; now, laying brocade upon flowers. Is there anyone with clear eyes who knows how to pick it up and sound it out? Step forward and try to strike and stimulate!” The Master then said: “Mind is not Buddha; grasping mind violates the lineage. Wisdom is not the Way; positing wisdom loses the purport. The Way is fundamentally unconditioned; Buddha is also without form. Discerning it at the place without form and unconditioned, all forms are entirely Buddha, all actions are entirely the Way. Raised up, heaven turns and earth pivots; set down, grass bends and wind blows. If it is the transcendent, it no longer falls into second or third, but goes straight in with a single blade. If brilliance still remains or one still lingers on the skin, inevitably one must right here talk of the wondrous and speak of the profound, expound affairs and expound principles, wield the staff and give shouts, cite the ancient and cite the modern. But tell me, after all, what does this mountain monk use to help people? Not abiding in the formless state of past times, searching externally for a kalyāṇamitra is also not genuine.”
